Girls appear for NEET
Girls secure seats
Fees for 5yr MBBS programme at private college
One million high school girls in India today appear for the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) to join MBBS or BDS courses and aspire to become doctors. However, only 15 thousand of them secure seats in the coveted MBBS/BDS programmes, the first degree in general medicine and dentistry respectively.
This is a loss of skilled human talent who can go on to create significant impact as caregivers or play a key role in the transformation of healthcare in the country. The DoctorBeti programme is for these girls who aspire to build a career in healthcare. Most of the students who qualify for government colleges, prepare for NEET using expensive private coaching which is not accessible for poor students and neither well established in small towns and villages.
Even after qualifying NEET exams, due to the lack of enough seats Government medical colleges, the option remains to take admission in private medical colleges, which charge prohibitively high fees between Rs. 40 lakhs to Rs. 80 lakhs or more for a five year MBBS program, making it difficult for a middle or low income student to sponsor their education. The access and availability is worse for girls due to various social constraints.
Simultaneously there is a need to grow the healthcare workforce in India and especially push for inclusion of women as qualified healthcare professionals. Presently India has only 20.9 healthcare workers for every 10,000 people. The scenario is further skewed when we consider qualified allopathic doctors and nurses which stand at 3.3 and 3.1 per 10,000 people. On the geographical dimension, there is a heavy skew against rural locations with over 75% of healthcare workers being located in urban areas.
Our mission is to develop this aspiration pool of young and ambitious girls emerging year-on year to succeed in the field of healthcare. DoctorBeti will enable access to better coaching and counselling for meritorious girls who are willing to appear for NEET through a video coaching programme. Moving forward, the programme will work with State governments and a network of institutions and not-for-profit organizations to provide every NEET qualified girl with a platform and opportunity to become champions in healthcare in India through online & offline education. Additionally, we will provide career counselling to connect with the diverse avenues in healthcare, even if they do secure a seat for a MBBS/BDS programme. This is to ensure that the talent is channelized.
Providing access to better coaching and preparatory resources for meritorious girls who have proven the capability to qualify NEET exam with good grades.
Creating a robust platform for the aspirant girls to explore other avenues in healthcare through online and offline counselling, connecting them to organizations in healthcare who are champions in the field, leadership insights from experts in the field of healthcare.
Ensuring the aspirant girls to continue their education in healthcare, and not drop out due to lack of support or knowledge on the same.
The programme welcomes not-for-profit organizations to join hands in raising resources for more NEET scholarships. Not for profit organizations working in healthcare can also join hands to be a knowledge and content partner for training girls who qualify the NEET but are not able to join the MBBS program
